Functionsuite Galleries programme three dedicated
art spaces within hospitals in Edinburgh and the Lothians. These
are: The Link Gallery at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, St Johns
Gallery at St Johns Hospital at Howden, Livingston, and The
Gallery at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. The Pelican
Gallery at the Old Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, closed in May 2003
when the hospital moved to its new site at Little France.
The galleries are the most visible contact point between the hospital
community and Artlink Hospital Arts. They are open all year, 7 days
a week. They have an estimated audience of 33,800 per annum.
The exhibition programme consists of exhibitions developed by Functionsuite,
exhibitions of work by staff and patients (open submission), touring
exhibitions and those selected from proposals. Our exhibition policy
is to both reflect and engage with the hospital as well as presenting
challenging new work to its community. By promoting exhibitions
to the wider community outside the hospital we also aim to bring
interested members of the public into the hospital to experience
it in a different way. Exhibitions have included Psalm by
Paul Rooney and Perceptions of Pain by Deborah Padfield.
Promoting debate around the exhibitions is a key intention. We organise
events and workshops to facilitate this.
