Psalm Paul Rooney / Louise Holden

Psalm 9 September 2003, the Mall at the new Royal Infirmary, Little France, Edinburgh

Psalm is a collaborative performance project by Liverpool-based Paul Rooney and Louise Holden, a professional singer and ex-patient, and the Speech and Language Therapy Department of St John’s Hospital. The performance was sung by the St Andrews Camerata Choir with Louise signing for the deaf. Paul Rooney introduces the performance which was followed by a discussion with Louise Holden.

Anna Best

24 September 2003, the Church Centre at the Edinburgh Royal Hospital.

Anna Best is an artist based in London who has a processed-based practice working collaboratively with artists and non-artists. Here she introduces three projects, A Real Pony Race for a Bridle, Phil (a project working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra) and The Festival of Lying, a collaboration with artists Nina Pope, Simon Poulter and Karen Guthrie. Issues discussed include the role of the collaborator, organisational skills and how a project influences the contributors in the long term.

Deborah Padfield and Dr Charles Pither

Finding a Language for Pain, 8 October 2003, Maggie’s Centre at
the Western General Hospital

Deborah Padfield (artist) and Dr Charles Pither (pain consultant) in collaboration with patients from INPUT pain management unit of St Thomas’s Hospital in London produced the Perceptions of Pain exhibition. Padfield and Pither received a grant to collaborate through the Sci-Art programme of the Wellcome Trust. Their talk titled ‘Finding a Language for Pain’ was held in the Maggie’s Centre at the Western General. Here Deborah is interviewed by Radio One Scotland about the overall project.

Issues discussed include how doctors and patients communicate about pain, and the visual expression of pain by individual sufferers.

John Bewley of Locus+

Jon Bewley of Locus+, 22 October 2003, Functionsuite Studio at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Jon Bewley is the Director and co-founder of Locus+, a Newcastle-based
organisation which commissions socially engaged collaborative and temporary art projects. Jon introduces three recent projects Gregnik (proto1) by Gregory Green, Fairy Tales and Factories by Laura Vickerson and the Sedbergh Stitchers, and Show Home by Nathan Coley.
Issues discussed include how artists should be selected for commissions, involvement of partners and how to assess the benefit of projects.
